Important Update from AeroPets Worldwide: New Zealand MPI Releases 2026 Cats & Dogs Import Health Standard
We are pleased to share the latest update from New Zealand’s Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI). The new Cats and Dogs 2026 Import Health Standard (effective 1 July 2026) brings some welcome improvements for pet owners while upholding New Zealand’s high biosecurity standards.
Key Changes in the 2026 Regulations
- No More Crate Seals Required for Category 3 Countries (Including South Africa) This is one of the most practical and welcome updates:
- Previously, travel crates for all non-Australian pets required a government-approved seal.
- From 1 July 2026: Pets arriving from Category 3 countries such as South Africa no longer require sealed crates.
This change simplifies preparation, reduces costs, and helps minimise stress on your pet during the journey.
- Strengthened Microchip Verification Requirements MPI has introduced clearer and more robust identity verification protocols. These are going to require advanced planning and will come with additional costs:
- The South African State vets must scan and verify the microchip at key stages of the export process. This requires that they see your pet/s in person to scan their chips and verify their identity.
- For Category 3 countries like South Africa, specific timing applies (particularly linked to rabies titre testing – RNATT). It is going to be best to plan your pet/s trip a minimum of 6 months in advance to limit the microchip verification process to just one. For pets that need to travel within 3 to 6 months, two microchip verifications will be required.
- The South African state vets must formally notify MPI of these verification checks.
These measures further strengthen documentation integrity and help ensure a smooth arrival in New Zealand.
South Africa Remains a Category 3 Country
The core requirements for pets travelling from South Africa remain, including:
- ISO-compatible microchip with official veterinary verification
- Valid rabies vaccination and recognised titre test (RNATT)
- Required parasite treatments and health certifications
- MPI Import Permit (applied for well in advance)
- Minimum 10 days in an approved New Zealand quarantine facility
- Arrival via approved ports (typically Auckland or Christchurch)
